There’s No Place Like Home Sock Club September

Spring is here! I I love Winter, the cosy season, and as knitters I feel that we relish the chance to snuggle up in our knits. But now that the crisp mornings are getting a little less so, the promise of Summer is in the air. The change of season is exciting!

Our sock yarn this month is a super special one. It is a blend of 80% Corriedale, 10% Mohair and 10% Llama. So far our sock club yarns have been a South Island Merino base, it’s fun to be able to change it up and highlight a different sheep breed. Corriedale sheep are a Merino cross, originating in New Zealand, as far back as the 1900’s, and this particular flock comes from the Manawatu in the North Island. Mohair and Llama work together to finish up this unique blend, providing the softness and strength we need in a no-nylon sock.

This batch was the last run of this blend from the mill. It was an absolute treat to get the yarn on the cone, and wind the skeins in our Ponsonby store.

One of the best parts of the change in season is getting to watch (and smell) the spring flowers bloom, whether these are blossoms on trees, or wildflowers popping up in the garden. We looked to capture some of these in our colourway this month. A beautiful subtle pink wash, with pops of bright floral colours make up our 100g skein. We couldn’t get enough of this yarn though, so added an extra mini in the same base with a sophisticated cool grey. This contrasts with the pink making the perfect toe and heel detail.

We’re knitting ours into two pairs. We’ve chosen to start with
Sari Nordlund’s Maj Sock. The delicate cuff cables, and all over texture pair beautifully with this subtle colourway. Or given that we are coming into the warmer months, perhaps you’d have more fun knitting a shortie. Dawn Henderson’s Lyne Sock is a great free pattern, and every bit as ornate as the Maj.

Depending on your gauge and cuff length, either of these patterns should leave you enough yarn to finish a second pair of your favourite socks using the contrast mini we’ve bundled in this month.

Happy sock knitting! Our next club will dispatch during Socktober and we’re thrilled to share what we’ve been working on.
