I'm a Beginner Knitter. Where Do I Start?
New to knitting? Welcome. You don't need to know everything before you begin.
If you've been admiring beautiful hand-knitted sweaters, scarves and cardigans and thinking, "I'd love to make that, but I wouldn't know where to start," you're in the right place.
At Prosper Yarn, we believe the best way to learn to knit is to begin knitting. You don't need to master every technique, understand every abbreviation or have years of experience before you can make something beautiful. You just need a pair of needles, some lovely yarn and a little patience with yourself.
We've helped plenty of complete beginners find their feet (and their stitches!), and we're here to help you do the same.
1. Start with a simple project
Our favourite first project at the Prosper Yarn shop is the Sophie Shawl. It's a wonderful introduction to knitting because it teaches you several useful skills without overwhelming you with complicated instructions.
As you work through the pattern, you'll learn how to:
-
Knit stitches and become more comfortable holding your needles and yarn.
-
Increase and decrease stitches to shape your work.
-
Use stitch markers to keep track of important points in your pattern.
-
Read and follow a knitting pattern, one instruction at a time.
-
Understand gauge and how it affects the finished size of your project.
-
See how yarn behaves as it becomes knitted fabric, and how the fibre, stitches and tension work together.
You'll also begin to develop your own knitting rhythm. At first, every stitch might require concentration. That's completely normal. With a little practice, your hands will start to find their way, and knitting will become much more natural.
Want to make a start? Take a look at our Sophie Shawl knitting kit and Sophie Scarf kit. Our kits are a convenient way to get started, and they help you choose the right yarn for your project.
2. Choose a yarn you'll love working with
Your first yarn doesn't have to be cheap or uninspiring. In fact, working with a beautiful yarn can make learning even more enjoyable.
We recommend Prosper DK as a great yarn for beginners. DK-weight yarn is a useful place to start because the stitches are easy to see, making it simpler to understand what your needles are doing. It's also a versatile weight for all sorts of projects.
At Prosper Yarn, we're passionate about luxury hand-dyed fibre. We want you to enjoy the experience of knitting as much as you enjoy the finished piece, and choosing a yarn you love is part of that experience.
Explore our Prosper DK yarn to discover the colours available.
If you already have a pattern in mind, we'd be delighted to put together a yarn bundle for you. Tell us what you'd like to make, and we can help you choose a suitable yarn, work out how much you'll need and find colours you'll be excited to knit with.
3. You can start with a sweater, too!
A scarf or shawl is a lovely starting point, but here's something that might surprise you: you don't have to knit lots of small projects before you're allowed to make a sweater.
We've seen complete beginners learn the knit stitch and go straight into a sweater pattern. With patience and a willingness to learn as they go, they can make wonderful progress.
If a sweater is what excites you, that's a perfectly good place to begin. We would much rather see you knitting something you can't wait to wear than feel you have to complete a series of projects that don't interest you.
Here are three patterns worth exploring:

Anker's My Size Sweater
A great option to investigate if you're dreaming of making your first garment. Choose this if you like the look of the finished sweater and feel motivated by the idea of making something you'll wear for years. We've made this sweater using Bach DK and Prosper DK.

Novice Sweater
The Novice Sweater is another popular starting point for new garment knitters. It offers a way to work towards a wearable sweater while building your confidence with patterns and garment construction. We made this holding Propser DK with a strand of Mint and loved the results!
Sunday Sweater
If you love the look of the Sunday Sweater, don't rule it out just because you're new to knitting. Look carefully at the pattern instructions and recommended yarn, and choose a pace that feels comfortable for you. It's knit on larger needles (size 7mm) so we recommend a strand of Prodper DK or Bach DK held with two strands of a Mohair like Mint.
All three are patterns by PetiteKnit. Before choosing, check the current pattern requirements, recommended yarn weight, gauge and sizing. A sweater is a bigger commitment than a scarf, so we're happy to help you work out how much yarn you'll need.
You can explore our Prosper Yarn collection and ask us to put together a yarn bundle to suit your chosen pattern.
4. Don't worry about getting everything right
One of the most important things to understand about knitting is that you learn by doing.
Your tension might be uneven at first. You might drop stitches, accidentally make extra ones or find yourself wondering what on earth a pattern is asking you to do. You may even need to undo a few rows and try again.
That's all part of learning.
As you knit, you'll develop a feel for how tightly to hold your yarn, how to move your needles and how the stitches sit together. You'll begin to recognise what your knitting should look like and spot when something isn't quite right.
This is also where learning about gauge becomes useful. Gauge tells you how many stitches and rows fit into a particular measurement. It's especially important for garments, because it helps determine whether your finished sweater will fit as intended.
You don't need to understand everything on day one. Start knitting, learn as you go, and give yourself permission to make mistakes.
5. Use YouTube when you get stuck
YouTube is a fantastic resource for new knitters. Sometimes, seeing someone demonstrate a technique is much easier than trying to understand it from written instructions.
Search for tutorials on the specific technique you're learning, such as:
-
How to cast on knitting stitches.
-
How to knit the knit stitch.
-
How to increase and decrease stitches.
-
How to use stitch markers.
-
How to read a knitting pattern.
-
How to fix a dropped stitch.
Pause the video, rewind it and follow along at your own pace. There's no pressure to keep up with anyone else.
One useful tip: search for the exact technique named in your pattern. Knitting has several different methods for increasing, decreasing and casting on, and following a tutorial that matches your instructions will help you get the intended result.
6. When should you book a knitting lesson?

We encourage beginners to spend a little time knitting on their own before deciding they need a lesson.
You might be surprised by how much you can learn through practice, a good pattern and a few helpful online tutorials.
However, if you've given it a go and are still struggling, a one-on-one lesson can be a wonderful way to build confidence. Having someone sit beside you, look at your knitting and explain a technique in a different way can make all the difference. Email info@prosperyarn.com and let us know what you need.
If you're local to Auckland, come and visit us at Prosper Yarn in Ponsonby/Grey Lynn. We're a friendly bunch, and we genuinely don't mind helping beginners when they get stuck.
You don't need to feel embarrassed about bringing in your knitting and asking a question. We've all been beginners, and every knitter has had moments when the stitches simply didn't seem to make sense.
7. Not in Auckland? We're still here to help
You don't need to live near our shop to get a little Prosper Yarn encouragement.
If you're knitting from elsewhere in New Zealand or overseas and have a question about getting started, use the chat function on our website. Your message will reach us, and I'll see it and help point you in the right direction.
We can also help you choose yarn for a project, including putting together a yarn bundle for a pattern you've already fallen in love with.
Whether you're choosing your first skein of Prosper DK, looking for a Sophie Shawl or Sophie Scarf kit, or planning your first sweater, we'd love to help you find your way.
Your first step is simply to begin

Knitting can become so much more than making clothes. It's a chance to slow down, work with your hands, explore colour and fibre, and create something that's entirely your own.
You don't need to be naturally crafty. You don't need to be perfect. And you certainly don't need to know everything before you cast on.
Choose a project that makes you excited, find a yarn you love, pick up your needles and give it a go.
And if you get stuck? Come and see us, or send us a message. We'll help you figure it out.
Welcome to knitting. We're so glad you're here.
Prosper Yarn — Live long and knit.
