Socktober is winding down and if, like us, you’re not quite ready to put away those tiny needles, we’ve got you!

We’ve paired our favourite yarn bases for socks with some of our best-loved patterns to see you through to the next Socktober. There’s something here for everyone, from everyday socks and stretchy ribbing to fluffy house socks and quick gifts.

Ready to dip your toe in?

Eco Sock + I’m so Basic

A straightforward introduction to sock knitting.

Let’s start with our classic sock base, Eco Sock. This yarn is a blend of 75% super-soft merino and 25% post-consumer recycled nylon. At 400m per 100g, one skein will cover many adult sock sizes! Being on the finer side, this base suits a tight gauge and pairs well with Summer Lee’s I’m So Basic pattern. This free, cuff-down, heel flap and gusset style of sock pattern walks you through each step in great detail. It’s a wonderful introduction to sock knitting, or a reliable go-to for quick gifts. The tighter gauge of 40 stitches per 10cm helps make the fabric more durable, great for people who want to wear their hand knit socks on a daily basis! Keep the colour simple with a semi-solid or have fun with one of our variegated colourways like Moab or Theory.

Legend Sock Set  + DRK Everyday Sock

Warmth, a rich colour undertone and stretchy ribbing.

Legend is a beautiful blend of 60% Merino, 20% Yak and 20% Silk. The yak adds lightweight warmth and a dark moody undertone to the base, while the silk strengthens without the need for nylon. Combined with bouncy merino, this base works so well in a variety of sock patterns, but we especially loved it in a ribbed sock. Andrea Mowry’s DRK Everyday Sock is a pattern we keep coming back to. The toe-up construction and fleegle heel means a great fit for many heel shapes. It is particularly good for gifting, as the ribbing hugs the foot - just what you want for your loved ones. Grab a Legend sock set and use the coordinating mini skein for contrast toes!

Possum Sock + Favourite Socks

A light, lofty fabric and a pattern with extra instep room.

Our newest sock base is Possum Sock, released just in time for Socktober 2026! It is a light and lofty woollen spun sock yarn with a unique blend of 20% New Zealand brushtail possum, 55% fine merino and 25% nylon. Read more about why we love Possum Sock so much here. The woollen spun nature of this yarn means it blooms beautifully, suiting the 32 stitch gauge of Black Cat Knitting Co’s Favourite Socks. Another toe-up pattern but this time with a shadow wrap heel and mini gusset, allowing for more room across the top of the foot. Great for those with a high instep. And with a generous 600m per skein, one skein of Possum Sock may even have enough for two pairs!

Eco Sock and Mint  + The Indoorsy Socks

Fluffiness and colour play.

Hold Eco Sock with a strand of Mint silk mohair for the ultimate in cosy. By adding a strand of lace-weight kid mohair and silk, our sock gets a gorgeous fluffy halo plus some additional strength from the silk. This is also a great opportunity to play with colour. By combining two different colourways, you can come up with a shade all of your own. Try a speckled skein of Eco Sock paired with a semi-solid in the mohair - this is one of our favourite ways to use Mint! The Indoorsy Socks pattern by Sonder Yarn Co. uses the same cuff down, heel flap and gusset style as the I’m So Basic sock, but with two strands held together we get a DK weight gauge. There are three different cuff options in the pattern, allowing you to customise and get the look (and fit!) you prefer.

Prosper DK  + Clog Socks

Satisfying cables in a thicker yarn.

Love the idea of DK weight socks, but prefer holding one strand? The Clog Sock kit utilises our most popular base, Prosper DK. This smooth and bouncy yarn is 100% merino grown and milled in the South Island of Aotearoa New Zealand. While it is not designed for socks, we love the thicker weight combined with the tight twist and four ply construction for this pattern. The cables make this a fun and fast knit. Keep them classic with the deep saturated blue of Eos, or freshen things up with our bright spring colourway Mantis. Summer Lee's design makes a lovely weight for house-socks, or a special treat to squirrel away until boot season.
